carmen vela

Spanish freelancer, based in London. Some more editorial that caught my eye. Being mostly image driven it may not seem that relevant to my own practice however the little type that has been used I like, specially the black print onto the charcoal stock. (The stock for these publications being sugar paper, off-white, standard) an effective means to have bold important type yet at the same time letting the images be the main focal point. Strong idea. Again this being something I feel I can improve my skill on, the relationship between image and type. This in my opinion being a really strong example of the two in harmony.

Atelier Martino & Jana

Two Portuguese designers came together and made Atelier Martino & Jana.
Came across their Behance page, again looking at pieces of editorial and publications.
For the last couple of years they have been producing these Jazz journals, annual publications.
This being their latest and my favourite.
And surprise surprise, black and white with one colour. Oh how I do love that scheme. Just makes everything look better.
In comparison to my last post this is a much more busy editorial with substantial text. Looking at these DPS's it does look as though there are a lot of words on the pages but I would safely say that there are more words on a page than you'd first think.
The publication itself is aimed at a fairly niche market so even though there appears to be quite a bit of text the readers will no doubt have a keen interest in Jazz and therefore want to read it.
One thing I like about this is the use of colour black / red on the pages, separating parts of the text and generally making the thing look a lot more pleasing. Furthermore it helps build the correct Hierarchy, (see second image). Furthermore loving the off-white stock. Off-late I've been avoiding using white stock, I feel it makes work look to bare at times and often the texture is a bit shit with white stock, sugar-paper, news print is what Im feeling and have been using of late and here is an example of similar use. This I feel would not look as interesting / appealing as it does here.
Another interesting part of this editorial, the amount of typefaces used, quite hard to do and not make it look too busy and hectic to read / mess up the hierarchy, props.

Alba Durana

The first part to Durana's Gesture based project. Essentially the same as the fold out poster but in the form of a publication. Again standard GD, black & white w/ bright orange.
Concerning my third brief of producing an editorial this is a contemporary example of the kind of work I like, and the level of quality I would like my work to be.
One key to this being successful and why it looks aesthetically pleasing and appealing is the clever use of white space. The pages aren't rammed with text or look to busy therefore making them appealing to the reader and something that the viewer would want to read.
Also loving the posters, strong use of image and type together, something that I feel I could and need to improve on.
All in all the project shows a well thought and effective print based range.

Alba Durana

Barcelona based designer, Alba Durana. An example of the kind of work he likes to produce, strong interest in type and editorial. This is one part of a project based on gestures, Id have more to say to describe it but its all in spanish.
You know I don't speak spanish! In English please!
Firstly it impressed me on how big it folds out too, considering how small and easily handled it is when folded. The stock also looks fairly good which is impressive considering how much it must have to fold. Reminiscent of the Size? publication, colour and format.
Standard good looking design, black, white and a bright spot colour!
Loving the condensed typeface, looking like the type Im currently working with.

10/11 Snowboards

Getting ever so close to the start of this years season, so thought Id post some of my fave designs for boars this year. Because I am essentially design driven I tend to go for board which are type driven, these being the best selection this year, for me anyway...

Rome:
A good strong brand, are one company that tend to focus on typography within their board artwork. Loving the filled type. Making type into something more, good stuff.
I believe a use of Helvetica aswell, relevant to my dissertation. The latter board is beautiful an all, simple, Helvetica bold, in uppercase and black, white backdrop, bright colour to set it off.
Good design = Black, White, bright colour.

Ride:
I own a Ride board at the moment and they are truly amazing boards, however their designs have slipped of late in my opinion. This years series of DH's are quite pretty though, bit too busy maybe but strong bold type holds focus.

Forum:
Amazing logo, almost very corporate, but just made to look sick and really appropriate to the audience. Good use of colour, basic CMYK job.

Bataleon:
They have got some amazing boards this year, loving the simplicity and use of type, noting its all different in each board, from stencil to hand drawn. Nice.

Yes:

My fave this year by a mile, Santa is getting me one fo sho.
Designed beautifully, minimal, bold type, getting the brand name out there, just YES! Strong range of the different applications of using the word 'yes'.

Pan Ams World

When researching for my dissertation came across these posters for Pan Am, an airline before my time.
What is really surprising is that they were designed in the early 70's, and considering these are nearly 40 years old they look sweet, proper minimal but effective. Beautiful photography with a beautiful typeface. winner.
It is rare these days to find something within advertising never mind corporate advertising that looks like this. What a shame.

Logo Book One & Two

Was having some trouble with some of my logo designs for my second brief so had a little trip to the library to go and look through pages and pages of logos. Photocopied the ones I found of interest, ones that were strong and well designed and also examples of logos that were appropriate to me and my brief, notably logos for music and the culture industry.

Going through them I found myself being drawn to certain styles, these ranging from simple bold strong type logos, crest / shield of arms designs, 3D type based designs and finally found myself being dragged to designs that included bold decorative 'funk' type, sounds awful but they look sick.

Going through these books really helped and I managed to come up with some new design ideas as well as coming up with little changes I could make to my logos so far to develop them further.
