BME / Music

MJ

The album cover for Michael Jackson's number ones, I like the arrangement of type and how it can be changed by having a different image on top, creating an effective series of designs, something to keep in mind perhaps.

BME / Music

Mika

Saw this and thought, wow that looks fun! Despite my utter despise for Mika this imagery does portray something exciting and fun, however it is a bit OTT like so i wouldn't want to produce imagery similar to this!

BME / Music Posters

Here just a few music based posters, promoting gigs and festivals. I think this is a form of media that could work well for the brief, making the BME feel much more related to music itself.
Chose these 3 also because I'm fond of the layout and composition of the type, my favourite being the one for Lovebox Festival. The bold black headlines on top of the light coloured type, i feel just works really well. A pleasure to look at.
I want to try and re-create the bottom poster but for BME including general details about the place, location what's on etc!

BME

Nick Deakin

Sheffield based illustrator, really like some of his designs, relating his style of work to this brief, well the images and characters are all exciting, light hearted and fun, something that we are aiming to produce ourselves. I also really like his overlying technique best shown on the skateboard and the t-shirt. Furthermore the t-shirt uses our selected colour scheme so gives a better idea of what kind of thing we could produce.

Nice.

BME / Motion Graphics

We could only find one animated video for the BME,

It's ok but i just feel its a bit boring, some of the kinetic type is illegible due to the colour and shine of it and the end just looks loose and not thought through at all, again the problem is, is that its not portraying the place as a fun and exciting place to go, the imagery of some of the museum shows that the place looks proper swarve and nice, they then tarnish it with some dodgy motion graphics.

BME / Motion Graphics

GlobalGathering

This is a motion graphic promotion for GlobalGathering this year, shows how the imagery previously shown can be transferred and applied to a different medium than print and what not!

This can be easily related to the BME, change the video in the background to be of footage from there and change the appearing text to something about the BME and it would pretty much work really well as a internet based advert. This video obviously being a promo for the festival which i found on the internet!

BME / Music

GlobalGathering

For the brief we will be using exciting and fun imagery! As the place is about music it makes sense to have this imagery all music related! As me and Martyn have been talking of possible ideas and figuring out our concept statement, the following imagery came to mind...

Im a big fan of this festival, but yeah, this kind of imagery is really relevant i feel to the BME, it also shows an exciting and visually fun way to portray music. To get something like this though your vector skills have to be shit hot and i dont feel id be able to produce something as good as these examples! Martyn might, im not too sure! But i think we can take a lot from these images, maybe tackling the location problem by including the o2 arena with some instruments?

A shot of the website for GG

Shows the possibilities of what a new website for the BME could look like, concerning the exciting imagery and that! I also really like the design for the 'dizzee roxy' thing, the layering of words in pastel like colours with opacity on 50 or something! This could lend itself to us, using red & blues.

BME / Websites

These are a few examples of what kind of style i think the BME website should be, clean and clear, precise and to the point. My favorite out of these have to be the one for Cravendale milk and BaseDesign. I really like the cravendale, it mixes being clear and clean with looking really fun and exciting, and its all for some milk, its quality. What i like about the site for BaseDesign is the layout which is used in some of the others here, but yeah i feel with Base the equal use of type and image works really well, this is what id like to create for BME.

BME

The website

It's far too busy! Thats the first thing i feel when i look at the site i just dont know where to look, there's no sense of a hierarchy and just far too many things trying to grab my attention.
Not only is this a problem in itself but the BME is a new thing, it opened in March 2009 and i hadn't heard of it till now and im sure a lot of other people have no idea what it is, so say if someone came across this website, they aint going to know what it is and this is made worse from having this jumbled mad busy website.
To make it not as busy it firstly just needs a clear background, the imagery behind all the info and what not is just really unnecessary.
On top of this there's just way to much info on one page at a time! The cherry on top for me is that all of the design on the website is just pretty average, not a fan of the words in different colour boxes, the website just doesnt portray the museum in a good light, its spose to be fun and interactive, that is just a bore.
Less is more.

Logo

The name of the shape is a Roundel. A roundel is essentially any rounded shape, however it is most commonly used with military aircraft as a type of national insignia. This working well for the BME, as that roundel is for the Royal Air Force of blighty, its effectively shouting 'OH HI THERE IM BRITISH!'
The image brings connotations of Britain by also using the colours of the Union Jack and is also similar to public transportation in and around london, the underground. This is also a positive effect of the logo, as the BME is in London so when people look at the logo they may think, oh Britian, underground, London.
Another strong connotation of the logo is the Mod scene, that from doing research i found started in the mid late 50's and peaked at roughly the mid 60's, artists such as The Who & Paul Weller are seen as being Mod, its music related so thats good!

BME /// The British Music Experience

This is the logo for the BME, pers
onally I'm in two minds about it, I quite like the round logo (Im not sure of the correct term for it but i will find out), it really works in the sense of capturing the essence of being British, with relevance to the RAF and the colours of the union jack. It also holds a strong music reference as it represents the Mod scene, which first came about in the early 60's i believe. One negative about the image is the two spots of highlight, i feel it may look better and a bit more understated without it. Furthermore depending on what print processes are used the shine could look really bad or just not appear at all. What is good about the logo is that i feel it lends itself to motion graphics, the circular body and layering of it gives a lot of potential to play with. Which is good as motion graphics is something that me and Martyn are planning to produce

Concerning the type, well its ok, i wouldn't say i like the typeface but then again i wouldn't say i didnt like it! This is something that i would like to change however the mandatories of the brief state i cant change it, but i can make something else saying 'British Music Experience'! I couldnt find what the typeface was but found some similar ones. Century Gothic, Comfortaa and Shinn are all fairly similar to it.

(Comfortaa)

Either way i think with any visual that we produce the logo as a whole will be fairly small, as what we are to trying to do is to show the BME as a fun and interactive place to go, the logo i feel doesnt quite show the fun-ness and interactivity of it.

DVD Packaging

This is wonderful. From the book i found this example of Japanese design, a cardboard net which folds over 4 ways and holds together closed by a little tab. The design is already designed to hold a cd case so i could straight use it like that or adapt it to either just hold the cd on its own or something else entirely different!

DVD Packaging

Book, Designer's Packaging Bible, Creative Solutions For Outstanding Design.

Has a section for CD's & DVD's, some really nice unique designs shows different styles, stocks, sizes etc.

This packaging taking the form of a gate fold, quite a nice idea for the packaging itself, lightweight and friendly- easy to open. What i really like about it is the design on the package, a bright and eye-catching intricate geometric pattern. However this isn’t relevant to my packaging as it will be using type and not image.

This showing a different form of packaging for a dvd, instead of a regular case the dvd comes in a box, with the dvd appearing to be a vinyl, ideas for printing onto the disk possibly?

This caught my eye as my packaging will be type based, and this is obv the same. An idea for composition, however my packaging will not hold as much information as this, furthermore i want mine to be clear and concise wheras this is very busy.

Sleeves, i like sleeves. I really quite like this example, a plain sleeve cover with a die-cut forming the colour and details of the product, simple and effect, minimal this kind of style is what i want to achieve.

DVD Packaging

Now in the last week of the brief i have turned my attention to how i will package my DVD. I want to keep it quite simple and representative of the work i have produced for this brief.

Here are two examples of packaging that i really like, firstly the simplicity of them, this being enforced with the no detail or print cardboard, and furthermore i love the ripping element of the latter package. It adds another aspect of interactivity which is a big part of this brief(DVD).
Using something like these two wouldn't really fit in with the work i have produced but i definitely want to incorporate the idea of interactivity with the package and using simple package nets as these.

DVD interface

Just some interesting examples of some existing DVD menus i found...

These taken from the website, eyeframe.co.uk, shows the capabilities within DVD Studio Pro and the different kind of styles that can be accomplished. From very slick, to a more hand crafted feel , intricate and in your face styles shown here.

Final Crit

Strengths:

. Well documented design process
. Good analysis of film material
. Vast info based research
. Thorough documentation
. Suitability of tone of voice
. Audio & type work well together

Weaknesses:

. Colour used doesn't reflect existing material
. Logo goes un-noticed
. White type and White background makes it feel empty
. Little kinetic typography research
. Links from research to design direction not clear enough
. Little critical awareness of secondary material
. Not a lot of experimentation with the type motion graphics

Actions to take from this:

. Simplify and make clear my design directions and rationale
. Add to existing research into kinetic type videos
. Create and experiment variations with the kinetic typography
. Look into the use of lighting within AE to create depth and lose the overwhelming 'vectorish' image
. Experiment with colour
. Play with logo, referring to point made on crit feedback sheet
. Play around and tweek with the ending of the idents, focusing on the smooth transition from quote to logo
. Experiment with type being bolder by the use of a stroke.
